Indian Classical Music and Beyond with Debajyoti Sanyal (Tabla) and Dara O’Brien (Sitar)
Debajyoti Sanyal (India) and Dara O’Brien (Ireland) present classical and contemporary Indian music. The ancient and sophisticated classical music of North India is rich in emotion, depth and nuance, taking the listener on an immersive journey from the sublime to the euphoric. The musicians also explore the sonic possibilities of these iconic instruments through contemporary composition and technology.
Originally from Kolkata, India, Debajyoti Sanyal is a world-renowned performer of the traditional Indian tabla (percussion instrument). She began training at the age of four from her father and has studied under traditional masters Pandit Anind Chatterjee and Pandit Shankar Ghosh. She tours regularly both locally and internationally, performing across a range of genres from classical to experimental, combining virtuosity with delicate nuances of expression.
Dara O’Brien is a composer, music educator and performer (sitar, guitar). He holds a PhD in Indian Classical Music from UCC and lectures and teaches on improvisation and sitar. He also works as a music therapist in the field of autism. He studied with his teacher Sougata Roy Chowdhury for many years in India. His diverse experience as a composer and performer includes music for ‘global fusion’, Indian classical music, jazz, rock, experimental sound, film and contemporary dance.
“An exceptional musician and composer…the genius of Ireland’s finest instrumentalist, Dara O’Brien.” Patrick Brennan, Irish Examiner
