Music is a universal language, something percussionist and singer Liron Meyuhas firmly believes. Israel’s first female hand drummer, she recently performed in Mumbai, Mandu in Madhya Pradesh, and Bhopal, events to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and India.

The hang drum is an instrument made 22 years ago by Swiss musicians Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, and Meillehas first encountered it on the streets of Jerusalem 17 years ago.

How do you master a relatively new instrument like the hang drum? You just figure it out yourself. At least, that’s what Meyuhas did. She combined her knowledge of percussion with guidance from its creators to create her own unique style.

Meyuhas, whose name means “my joy and my song”, says the Mumbai crowd was much younger and the MP crowd was more relaxed. “Despite the language barrier, they understood the energy of the sound. It was like I was exposed to two different things. [types of] “It has been very well received by Indian audiences,” she says.
Though she listens to the music of the late sitarist and composer Pandit Ravi Shankar and tabla player Ustad Zakir Husain, Meyuhas says she “hasn’t fallen in love with traditional Indian music yet.” “But that would be amazing,” she adds. She would also like to play with sitarist Anushka Shankar, and to blend her style with that of Bollywood musicians to create something unique.
Meyuhas plays several instruments including West African drums, frame drums, piano and guitar. When asked if the Indian tabla is on her list of instruments she would like to learn, she replies: “If you want to learn tabla, you need to study with a master for at least a month.
