To understand the new smart watched and other pro devices of recent focus, we should look to Silicon Valley and the quantified movement of the latest generation. Apple’s Watch records exercise, tracks our moves throughout the day, assesses the amount of time we are stood up and reminds us to get up and move around if we have been sat for too long – let’s not forget Tim Cook’s “sitting is the new factor” line. A Roberts Creek craftsman and entrepreneur has inked a potentially very lucrative deal with Canada’s largest musical instrument retailer to begin selling his own instruments in the company’s stores. For more than four years, Bryn Klingwall has been producing hundreds of “melodic steel instruments” each year from his garage-sized workshop on Flume Road, selling them online and in a few small music stores under the name Kindred Spirit Steel Drums. Now national retailer Long & McQuaid has agreed to start carrying his growing line of metal drums. Klingwall didn’t have to knock on the doors of retail giants; it came…
The Opsilon Handpan (also known as a Hang Drum) is the instrument you never knew you needed in your life. Similar to a steel drum, the handpan is played with the hands (as you’d expect) and is domed rather than upside down. Musician Kate Stone is no stranger to hand drums; in fact, she’s practically a pro. Her YouTube channel is packed with her music, but her performance of “Urban” may be the most captivating of them all. Facebook Originally from Berlin, Kate began playing classical piano at a young age before discovering the hang drum, which she describes as…
“If I say I’m trash, you can easily replace me,” says rapper as he requests a snappy collaboration Ellie Goulding and Juice WRLD team up on the breezy new sadomasochistic track “Hate Me.” “Hate me, hate me/Tell me how much you hate me/Tell me I’m trash and you can easily replace me,” Juice WRLD sings over smoothly programmed drums and palm-muted guitar. “Tell me I smoke dope and I’m wasting my money every day/Maybe there’s no one around to numb my pain.” Throughout, Goulding confronts her ex about romantic regret and paranoia: “I bet you wouldn’t close your eyes and…
The sound is unique and captivating to the ears. Shaped like a UFO, the handpan is a relatively new instrument on the music scene. Though this music sounds old-fashioned, it was first created by two steelpan tuners in Switzerland around 2000. The top part has a sound that is played by the hands, and the bottom part is like a resonating cavity. When Jenny Robinson of Madison first heard a handpan she wondered, “What on earth is that?” and immediately knew she wanted to incorporate the sound into her life. This was the beginning of her quest to not only…
Art by: Arida [Photo provided to China Daily] On January 19, a beautiful sound like dripping water echoed through the exhibition hall of the Central Academy of Culture and Administration in Beijing. The sound was that of a metal drum, a type of percussion instrument, being played by Li Yunke. The instrument originated in America, but Lee has improved the drum. “It is coated with Chinese lacquer to reduce vibration,” Li says, “and the instrument is tuned to the Chinese pentatonic scale.” Li’s drumming show was part of an exhibition in a program supporting creative talent and entrepreneurship in the…

2015-12-28 21:28:00 Elbert BurnsThe Hang Drum, a mysterious percussion instrument with a deep, piercing sound like a disk-shaped UFO, has gradually become known since it first appeared around 2000. The unique, calm sound and the passionate melodies that it produces have captivated many people, and it seems that you can easily experience the Hang Drum with a smartphone app.◆ Hang drum sounds and performancesThe hang drum was developed in 2001 by the Swiss musical instrument manufacturer PANArt, and the principle of how it produces sound is almost the same as the steel drum (steel drum) often used in Caribbean music.…
Building a futuristic new instrument takes more than just a clever idea. It requires the perfect balance of resources, funding, input from musicians, and other factors. These factors can present cold, harsh realities, but if handled right, they can also create opportunities. And that’s part of what made SONAR+D, held last week in Barcelona, such a fascinating place. The sold-out SONAR festival brought together the engineering, musical inspiration, and business know-how it takes to make music. The Kickstarter-sponsored pavilion superstar, The Oval, was a highlight for me, I saw it just before SONAR opened, when the crowdfunding campaign had just…
