Photos of Chadwick can be seen at the moving memorial service.
The private event came after a public memorial was held in Chadwick’s hometown of Anderson, South Carolina on Thursday (September 3), which included a screening of “Black Panther,” in which Chadwick plays King T’Challa and his alter-ego, as well as a video of a speech he once gave at Howard University.
Meanwhile, local officials in Anderson are moving forward with plans to erect a permanent monument honoring Chadwick after thousands of people signed a petition calling for a statue of Chadwick to be erected to replace a Confederate monument currently on display in the city.
More than 66,000 people have signed a petition calling for the erection of a monument to the Hollywood star, while another has been signed by more than 59,000 people.
DeAndre Weaver, an Anderson University student who started one of the petitions, wrote, “Boseman is truly an American treasure whose accolades are endless. It is only fitting that his work will be celebrated in the same place that created him.”
A spokesperson for the city of Anderson said, “The statue is on county property but falls under state jurisdiction. Anderson Mayor Roberts is open to working with the county and state to explore the future of this monument.”
At this time as our city mourns the loss of one of our natives, it feels appropriate to focus our hearts and minds on mourning the loss of Chadwick Boseman.
I can also say without a doubt that we will prepare a permanent, public tribute to Chadwick Boseman that he deserves. We will do it right, in world-class fashion. — BANG
