The song, along with Buffett’s new original song “Bourbon Street University,” will appear on Buffett’s posthumous album, “Equal Strain on All Parts.”
Before his death, Jimmy Buffett put his own spin on one of Bob Dylan’s most Buffett-esque songs, “Mozambique,” and enlisted Emmylou Harris to reprise her backup vocals on the original. The cover will appear on Buffett’s posthumous album, “Equal Strain on All Parts,” due for release on November 3rd.
Dylan’s original, from his 1976 album Desire, is a rollicking, upbeat song in its own right, but not without some rough touches: Buffett and Harris have kept the energy of the original while smoothing out some of the edges, most notably substituting the soft creak of the original’s violin (played by Scarlett Rivera) for the dulcet sounds of the steelpan drums.
The song is accompanied by an accompanying behind-the-scenes music video of Buffett, Harris and the band recording the song in the studio, interspersed with some pastoral footage, likely shot in Mozambique, that contrasts amusingly with footage of Buffett in a scarf and Harris in a coat and gloves working in the studio.

Following “Mozambique” is Buffett’s new original song, “University of Bourbon Street,” featuring the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and as the title suggests, in which Buffett speaks to and praises the influence of his musical education in New Orleans.
Buffett completed Equal Strain on All Parts just before his death from skin cancer on September 1 at the age of 76. Three tracks from the album were released about a week after his death: “Like My Dog,” “Bubbles Up,” and “My Gummy Just Kicked In.” Paul McCartney appears on bass on “My Gummy Just Kicked In.” Angélique Kidjo also appears on the album.
